New England artist Herbert Barnett created oil paintings that capture the rugged beauty of Cape Ann, intimate country still lifes, and portraits of mid-century figures. His work reflects the influence of Cézanne and early Cubism, employing intersecting planes of color and transforming seemingly ordinary subjects into dynamic compositions. Barnett’s paintings often reveal the process of their making, with underdrawings and preliminary sketches discernible beneath the surface.
A prodigious talent, Barnett held his first international solo exhibition at age 17 and went on to exhibit widely throughout his career. His work was shown at the Art Institute of Chicago, Carnegie Institute, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and in numerous New York galleries, including the Downtown Gallery and Metropolitan Gallery of Modern Art. He later became Dean of the Cincinnati Art Academy, influencing a generation of American painters.
